Simultaneous Figure/Ground and Free-Form

I collected leaves of all shapes and sizes to make a clipping mask for both the digital and traditional aspects of this project. For the traditional part, I painted a predominantly violet background and painted the leaf clipping mask with mostly yellow, red, and orange. I pieced them together and painted a little bit on the whole piece to tie the mask and the background together a little. The idea was to create interesting shapes with the negative space the leaf clipping mask made in addition to the positive space they occupied.

For the digital portion, the focus was on texture. I used the same clipping mask, divided the canvas into nine sections, applied the rubbings I did for a texture effect, and manipulated varying sections with color and transformation to create a new and interesting texture and color scheme.

With the free-form pieces, I used the leaves themselves and acrylic paint to create shapes and overlapping masks.
